La Carménère is considered one of the six red grapes originating in Bordeaux. It is one of the oldest European varieties. At one time it was difficult to find Carménère wines in France because due to the phylloxera plague of 1867, which destroyed almost all the vineyards in Europe, affecting the Carménère vine in particular to such an extent that for years it was believed that it was extinct.
